As they were walking down the street toward the milliner’s shop, Clara paused when they passed by a storefront with golden arches and the most delicious smell drifting through the door whenever it opened. Travis grinned. “Fast food isn’t healthy, Clara.”

What difference did it make if food was cooked fast or slow? She tried to walk away, but the smell kept drawing her back.

“Okay, Clara,” Travis relented. “Just this once. However you must realize that being a doctor, even entering one of these places goes against everything I paid an extraordinary amount of money to be taught.”

Smiling, Clara hurried through the door. Glancing around, she noticed people eating sandwiches of meat and bread, along with long, thin sticks of some sort.

Travis led the way to the counter and ordered, “Two # 1’s with unsweetened tea.”

Unsweetened tea? He could not be serious. “Please make mine sweet tea if you don’t mind, Dr. Winthrop.”

Travis couldn’t help but chuckle. “If we are setting aside the hazards of sugar and fried food for the day, we might as well go all the way, huh?”

“I suppose so,” she agreed. Since when was sugar and fried food hazardous to your health?

With a wink, he added, “ I will order sweet tea on one condition.”

Whatever could he mean? “What would that be, Dr. Winthrop?”

“That you call me Travis instead of Dr. Winthrop.”

“Agreed.” She had already observed that few people addressed each other properly in this century.

“Make that two #1’s with sweet tea and two apple pies.”

Oh, boy! Apple pie.

Travis paid and received a tray carrying their food in a very short span of time. Following him to a table overlooking the street, she smiled at the curious onlookers who seemed unable to take their eyes off of her simply gorgeous day dress.

Travis took his food off the tray and slid the remaining food in front of her. Picking up one of the crispy golden sticks she took a bite, savoring the salty treat and all but swooned with delight. It was delicious. “What is this, Doctor… Travis?”

“It’s a French fry.” Had she never tasted a French fry before?

She ate the box of medium fries without slowing down, washing it down with a paper cup filled with perfectly sweetened iced tea.

“Try your burger.” Travis motioned toward her sandwich as he took a bite of his. Clara watched as he chewed slowly, sighing with pleasure as his mouth savored the forbidden delicacy.

Unwrapping her own sandwich, she found two pieces of thin meat between slices of bread dripping with sauce. Hesitantly, she bit into the concoction and her taste buds exploded. Sandwiches certainly had never tasted this good at home.

“It’s the special sauce,” Travis informed her. “That’s what makes it taste so good.”

Clara continued to chew, all the while eyeing his French fries covetously. With a twinkle in his eyes, Travis placed his remaining fries on her tray. “Thank you,” she mumbled. “I have never tasted food so delicious.” Well, that wasn’t entirely true. The apple pie in the little box didn’t hold a comparison with the homemade apple pie her grandmother Lucille used to make.
